Named in July 1959 when Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip sailed down the newly opened St. Lawrence Seaway and stopped in Chicago aboard the Royal Yacht Britannia.
The Royal Couple alighted here and walked to a dinner in their honor at the Chicago Hilton hosted by Mayor Richard J Daley. In 2005, the city closed the pedestrian crossing citing the need to improve traffic flow, but in 2011 it was announced that the crossing would be reinstalled.
