הוקמה בשנת 1956 והוכרזה כעיר בשנת 2000. אוכלוסיית נתיבות מונה 25,000 אנשים.
עיקר פרסומה של העיר בא כמקום מושבו, ולאחר מכן מקום קבורתו, של הבאבא סאלי, אשר לזכרו נערכת בכל שנה הילולה.
