The tradition of Aggie Bonfire dates back to 1909. It was built by students and burned the night before the annual football game against the University of Texas. Bonfire collapsed on November 18, 1999, killing twelve students and injuring at least 27 others. A memorial was constructed on the site and was commemorated in 2004.

The Bonfire Memorial embodies many layers of meaning associated with the Aggie Spirit — a deep sense of belonging, a strong spirit of teamwork and leadership and an enduring sense of tradition that unites thousands. The Bonfire Memorial celebrates the tradition, history and spirit of Texas A&M, and the dedication of those involved in the tragic collapse of the 1999 Bonfire. In doing so it unites Aggies past, present and future.

Bonfire was never held after 1999, though the spirit continues in an off-campus Bonfire burn which the university does not recognize.
