office building, landmark, high-rise, 1983_construction
333 Wacker Drive is a highrise office building located on the northwest corner of the Chicago Loop. On the side facing the Chicago River, the building features a curved green glass facade, while on the other side the building adheres to the usual rectangular street grid.
The height of 333 Wacker Drive is 487 feet (149 metres) and 36 floors. It is exactly 301 feet wide, from one end of the curve to the other in a straight line.
The base is serrated on the south and east sides. This created a major engineering problem since the columns couldn't meet the edge of the building squarely.
A nine-panel mural, the largest painting ever by artist Jim Dine, was commissioned in 1985 by the Nuveen Company for its headquarters on the 33rd floor. The offices of the building's developer feature a large bronze sculpture by Richard Hunt called "Organic Construction".
The building was featured in the 1986 movie "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" as the building containing Ferris Bueller's father's offices. It was also voted "Favorite Building" by readers of the Chicago Tribune in 1995. On posters for the film "The Truman Show", the curved wall was portrayed in a photomontage as a giant television screen.
This building was the first skyscraper designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates, who have gone on to become one of the world's best-known designers of tall buildings. The firm also designed the buildings immediately east and south of it (225 West Wacker and 191 North Wacker).
