The most respected stage in Ireland, for decades, The Gate has been synonymous with Irish Theatre around the world.
The Gate Theatre, which was founded in 1928 by Hilton Edwards and Micheįl MacLiammóir, is unique in the fact that in the intervening seventy years it has had only two artistic directorates, the founders and the current director Michael Colgan. The Gate introduced Dublin audiences to the work of Ibsen, Chekhov, O'Neill and Zola. It was here, too, that Orson Welles and James Mason began their acting careers.
