Also known as "Werve Thompson Army Air Field".

Built on a hilltop for the US Army in 1952/53, Bad Hersfeld Airfield was first used by the 24th Constabulary Squadron and later by 14th and a 11th Armored Cavalry Regiments. LtCol Werve and Captain Thompson, the air officer of the 3rd Battallion, 14th Armored Cavalry Regiment were killed in the crash of their L-19 in 1953. The airfield at Bad Hersfeld was named after them. The asphalt runway measured 670 x 18 meter and was lightened for night operations.

In the end, late eighties, four helicopters of 11th ACR were permanently stationed here. Since the airfield was given up by the Army on 12.08.92, it is only occasionally used by civil traffic.
