In his last years, the writer Robert Louis Stevenson established himself upon this estate, which he named Vailima ("Five Rivers"). It later housed a series of colonial administrators, and after independence in 1962, became the official residence of Samoa's head of state. Substantially restored after being damaged by hurricanes in 1990 and 1991, the building is now a museum featuring many of Stevenson's original belongings.
