The Bala Gorge is where the Beni River breaks through a mountain range about 12 kilometres south of Rurrenabaque. (The Beni River flows from south to north).

The Bala Gorge is the Bolivian Amazon rainforest and the west side of the gorge is in the Madidi National Park.

A hydroelectric dam project in the gorge has been proposed (about year 1999), but has been given up.

"Bala" means "bullet" or "cannon ball". The landmark "Bala" is the ’shot hole’ in the mountain range close to the Bala Gorge.
The San Miguel del Bala Eco-Lodge is situated 3 kilometres north of the Bala Gorge.
