The NCCA Metropolitan Theater (formerly known as the Manila Metropolitan Theater) is an art deco building designed by the Filipino architect Juan M. de Guzman Arellano, and built in 1935. During the Battle of Manila in 1945, the theater was heavily damaged. It was reconstructed but gradually fell into disuse in the 1960’s. In the following decade it was meticulously restored during the Presidency of Ferdinand Marcos through the initiative of his wife, then-Metro Manila Governor Imelda Marcos. After several years, the theater again fell into decay. The theater was finally closed in 1996. In 2017, the theater was restored by its new owner, the National Commission for the Culture and the Arts after it was purchased from the GSIS. It will reopen on 2022.

The sculptures in the façade of the Theatre are from the Italian sculptor Francesco Riccardo Monti, who lived in Manila from 1930 until his death in 1958, and worked closely together with J.M. de Guzman Arellano.Highly stylized relief carving of Philippine plants executed by the artist Isabelo Tampingco decorate the lobby walls and interior surfaces of the building.

  • AGREE!!!
  • I remember seeing "Florante & Laura" by Francisco Balagtas here. I agree that this the Met must be restored, not only for its architectural value but for its historical and cultural value as well.
  • Yes,I do concur. This infrastructure must be restored for the sake of the preservation of our own Philippine culture and heritage. This can also be a source of income for the city government when restored thus giving livelihood for those who had already performed here a long time ago before it was closed. Actually, there are a lot more places here in Manila that should be maintained and restored,I dont know why can't they implement such necessary actions. Through that,it can boost the tourism here in our country.
  • the CLIMAX of PHILIPPINE ART DECO ARCHITECTURE... best ART DECO BUILDING IN THE PHILIPPINES. But unfortunately this building is victim of neglect and mismanagement.
  • This building is the soul of our culture and arts and it is clearly seen on its on its exterior and interior details. But it is really sad reality that this building slowly deteriorate its former glory.
  • I've seen this building once when I was a child. Never thought it was a theater at that time though. Even though I wasn't born in Manila, I just hope that its government and the national government will be able to restore this masterpiece.
  • political will at its finest...
  • The Grand Dame of Philippine theaters. A silent witness of Manila's glorious past. This magnificent edifice should definitely be restored.
