Kopanang Main Shaft

 mine, production

Kopanang primarily mines the Vaal Reef at depths between 1,300m and 2,600m, with some mining occurring in the Crystalkop Reef which is situated around 250m above the Vaal Reef. A single shaft that is 2,334m deep provides access to the workings. Gold is the main mineral extracted with uranium-oxide as a by product. Due to the complex nature of the orebody scattered mining is employed and the orebody accessed by footwall tunnelling, raised on dip of the reef and stoped on strike. Gold Processing uses conventional semi-autogenously grinding and carbon-in-pulp methods.
