Isle of Man

Isle of Man / Douglas /

The Isle of Man or Mann (Gaelic; Ellan Vannin) is a self-governing Crown dependency, located in the Irish Sea at the geographical centre of the British Isles.

The head of state is Queen Elizabeth II, who holds the title of Lord of Mann. The Crown is represented by a Lieutenant Governor. The island is not part of the United Kingdom, but external relations, defence, and ultimate good-governance of the Isle of Man are the responsibility of the British government.

The Isle of Man is not a part of the European Union, but has a limited relationship relating to the free movement of goods.

The island served as the inspiration of the Rev. Awbrey's "Island of Sodor" in the Thomas the Tank Engine stories. A clue in this is the fact that official name of the Anglican Diocese that includes the Isle of Man is the Diocese of Sodor and Man.

Sadly now full of bitter Daily Mail reading English people insistent on telling come-overs that you decided to move to the island because YOU hate england and how much better absolutely everything is compared to England. Expect direct comparisons from them of the crime in Andreas to the crime in inner city London and also telling you how much tax you can save day to day, ignoring the fact that ferry, flight and general increased prices completing wipes out lower income tax. Despite this the Island is very pleasing on the eye and the Manx people are friendly. Lots to do in terms of walking and seeing some of the tourists sites, though the night life is desperate. Avoid the museums, they're pretty poor in general especially the main one in Douglas and house of Mannanin. Get out into the countryside and see the history for yourself, not in a building. You can see everything in a weekend thats worth seeing if you come over by car. If walking i imagine you could spend weeks possibly months
