Launch Complex 34 (Historic)

Used to launch both the Saturn I and Saturn IB rockets, Pad 34 is also the site of the tragic Apollo 1 launch pad fire in January, 1967, killing Mercury & Gemini veteran Col. Gus Grissom (USAF), Gemini veteran Lt. Col. Edward H. White, III (USAF), the first American to walk in space, and rookie astronaut Lt. Comm. Roger Chaffee (USN). After the fire, the Saturn IB was taken down and reassembled at Pad 37 for the Apollo 5 mission (conducted in mid-1968) and a new Saturn IB, carrying the manned Apollo 7 mission under the command of Mercury and Gemini veteran Wally Schirra, occured in October, 1968, paving the way for Apollo test flight leading up to the lunar landing in 1969.
