  • This site is the former 'Fliegerhorst Rothwesten', constructed in 1934 and used as a base of operation for long range reconnaissance flights during WW II. After the war it was occupied by U.S. forces, initially as billets for a Constabulary force and, from 1948 onwards, as a base of operations for the conduct of Cold War electronic surveillance and, commencing 1963, also as a base for missile defense systems. Throughout this period it continued to be identified as 'Rothwesten Air Base'. In 1976, the U.S. forces withdrew, and the site was occupied by the Bundeswehr, who re-named it the 'Fritz-Erler-Kaserne'. All Bundeswehr activities were withdrawn by the end of 2007. The site is currently being promoted for potential redevelopment as a commercial property.
  • Wrong place. The Fliegerhorst is ~1.5 km NE from here.
  • Well of course its NW, not NE.
