Sheep ranching was started in October 1923 by Aleutian Livestock Company and Western Livestock Company. It continues to this day.

Dr. Andrew C. Smith received a permit in 1917 to operate a cod and salmon salting station here, in addition to grazing livestock on the island. He also received a one-year permit in that same year to graze sheep near Dutch Harbor. Smith provided medical care to local residents, including Inuit, and was transported to villages aboard U.S. Coast Guard vessels.

Livestock belonging to the Buckley Livestock, Fisheries, & Transportation Company grazed in this area in 1918.
