Originally constructed as a feeder reservoir for the Miami-Erie Canal in 1845, Grand Lake St. Marys was for many years recognized as the largest man-made reservoir in the world. It took 8 years to construct and is 13,500 acres.

  • Grand Lake is over 11 miles long and 4 miles wide, and undergoing even more man made changes as state funds allow. Dredging and 5 islands have been approved but their future placement has not been released.
  • While certainly an intersting and historic location, Grand Lake is not nearly that large, at 8 miles long and an average of just over 2 miles wide.
