France / Alsace / Colmar
 church, Gothic (architecture)

St. Martin's Collegiate church was built between 1235 and 1365 and is a major example of Gothic architecture in Alsace. The south tower was burnt down in 1572 by a fire that also destroyed its framework and ridge. It was replaced 3 years later by the bulb-shaped dome that gives the building its characteristic appearance. The church has been restored several times. The latest restoration works ended in 1982. The foundations of a church dating back to the end of the first millennium were discovered.
