Amarnath caves (Hindi: अमरनाथ गुफा) is one of the most famous of Hindu temples, dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in Jammu and Kashmir, Republic of India. The temple is reported to be around 5000 years old and is a popular pilgrimage destination for Hindus - about 400,000 people visit during the 45 day season around the festival of Shravani Mela in July-August, coinciding with the Hindu holy month of Shravan. Inside the Amarnath Cave lies the ice Shiva Linga (along with two other ice formations representing Ganesh and Parvati) a natural formation of an ice stalagmite in the form of lingam..
Location: Amarnath is In Kashmir valley to the north of anatnag.The base village is bailgANv (pahalgam). One has to trek 32 km from chandhanvari (16 km from bailgAnv) to reach the holy cave, the Lord's abode. It is at an altitude of 13500 feet from the mean sea level.

  • Putting the facts straight ( with due respects ) for sanity sake: 1) This cave was discovered only about 120 years ago by some Muslim shepherds of Pahalgam, and was not known to the Hindus before that time. The abode of Shiva in Hindu mythology has always been Mount Kailasha and not this one.. 2) Where did you get the 5000 year number ? Do you mean the cave did not exist prior to that time ? If so do you have any scientific proof ? 3) It is actually the formation of the stalagmite. In this case it just happens to be made of only ICE. There are many such caves around the world where stalagmites and stalactites are formed. 4) You can find plenty of Shiva Lingums ( this time made of pure calcium carbonate). They don't melt away. These are erect all year long. In the US state of Oregon.. please visit.. http://www.nps.gov/orca/ It will be nice if you visit USA to see these Lingums.. We Americans also need some of your tourism.. except that we only allow tourism in our wild life areas.. no religious mumbo-jumbo ;) We respect environment more than ruthless and fanatic religious beliefs Sincerely
  • Dear american geologist, please come down from your ivory tower. If millions of hindus believe something, there is no need for them to have "sientific proof". Sientific proof changes with time. "religious mumbo-jumbo" is insulting. Tell your president and his parish about "religious mumbo-jumbo"!

And Amarnath is the cave where Shiva explained the secret of life and eternity to his divine consort Parvati. 2) The temple is reported to be about 5,000 years old and has been mentioned in ancient Hindu texts. 3) Formation is a visible symbol of faith. Science can never explain religious beliefs. 4) Hinduism didn't originate in America. In fact no religion has ever originated in America. Thats why no one visits america for religious pilgrimage. It only has lots of war memorials and cemeteries.
  • we was there on aug-1986, just few days after the sacred day. we did sleep along the way in tents close to a brook, not much far from a glacier; a shepard came to us because he had an heavy tooth-hache, we had the right medicines...; walking and on ponies we arrived to the cave; still I remember 2 shaddus, one scalled us because of the photoes, the other one was glad to be photoed... and he signed our forehead.
  • America neither strong in terms or morality nor religiously. They are simply money extorting country from the other countries. If they would have been asked about their own GOD, I think first they will go whether he exist or not. I can simply advice him if you are judging anyone means you don't trust him. As far as judgement shows their own mentality & nothing more or less. No doubt if it has come to the notice only 120 years ago, then the faith should not be there. Hence, Mr. American keep your knowledge to save your own country who never trust on their own father then how can they trust on other religion or faith.
  • Where science ends mythology starts. So, the question of scientific proof as raised by the American Geologist (guest) has got no value. A few days back I visited cave to have a 'Darshan' of Amarnath Ji and after 'Darshan' I did not feel any pain of journey. I believe it is by the shower of blessing of Bhola Baba. Jai Bhole...!!! Om Namah Shiva...!!! Jai Baba Barfani...!!!!
  • I did not got scope to visit amarnath But I heard from my friend who is a eyewitness of the holy place. This American friend should not comment on the holy faith of Hindus.
