This marks the site of the first Christian sermon preached in New Zealand, on Christmas morning 1814.
Samuel Marsden, chaplain to the Governor of New South Wales was the preacher, and the sermon was interpreted by Tuatera, a young chief who had met Marsden seven years earlier on the ship bringing him to Australia.
Marsden returned to Sydney, leaving behind a mission station at Rangihoua, manned by five missionaries and artisans.
