The home was originally built on a grant of land received from the Matinecock indians by John Cock in 1680. Cock family descendants remained on the site until 1899 at which point it was sold. Subsequently owned by Horatio Nelson Slater and Martha Byers Lyon the home was greatly expanded over the years but still retains the original 17th century core.
The two massive boxwoods opposite the front door predate the revolution.
