Landmark 158
400 Sansome Street (At Sacramento)
Built 1924
The Old Federal Reserve Bank, designed by George W. Kelham, has the look of an archaeological dig, as if two buildings from different eras had been unearthed and left for our contemplation. The lower building with its Ionic colonnade is pure Beaux-Arts, while the upper building is in the new Moderne fashion of 1924.
The interior is notable for its former banking hall and for the lobby with murals by Jules Guerin who created the palette for the 1915 Panama Pacific International Exhibit.
