Florida West Coast Symphony (Sarasota, Florida)

The Florida West Coast Symphony Orchestra grew out of the dreams of Mrs. Thomas W. Butler, local pianist and music teacher. As described in the silver anniversary publication about the symphony, Mrs. Butler thought it would be wonderful if Sarasota and Bradenton had their own orchestra. Early in 1949 she and three others organized the symphony and persuaded Dr. Lyman Wiltse, professor of music at the University of Tampa, to meet with the musicians at an organizational meeting, rehearse with them and conduct one concert. Initially attracting more than 50 musicians whose experience ranged from high school band to professional orchestra, the new symphony presented its first concert in the Sarasota Municipal Auditorium that March. Wiltse agreed to conduct the group for one full season in spite of his already-full schedule. There were three concerts that first season, each performed in both Bradenton and Sarasota. Ticket prices were $1.50 for adults and $1 for students.
