One of Chicago's premier hotels since its opening in 1920. Its rooftop sign can be seen for several miles when approaching the central city from the north on Lake Shore Drive.

This and the Millennium Tower Building (west of it right across Michigan Ave.) are the northernmost cornerstone buildings of Chicago's Magnificent Mile. This mile of upscale hotels (like the Drake Hotel) and its fine restaurants and exclusive shops is Chicago's equivalent of New York City's Park Avenue.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.
