park, place with historical importance
Formerlly known as Marina Airfield, its history is mostly unknown. A marker at the park hints at it being the site of the first terminus of the US Post Office Dept. Transcontinental Air Mail Service; the first mail plane landed here on Sep. 9, 1920. Oddly enough, the first known depiction of the field on a map wasn't until 1946.
On Aug. 30, 1944, Marina Airfield was also the site of the first sustained flight on the West Coast of a helicopter designed and built on the West Coast. The date of the field's closure is currently unknown. It's now a popular locale for kite flying.
