bane of Santa Cruz traffic, the "fish hook" is where highway 17 ends and travellers can merge onto highway 1 southbound.

Highways 1 and 17 around the fish hook are currently under construction till Spring 2009. The Highway 1/17 Merge Lanes Project will improve safety and traffic flow through the Highway 1/17 interchange area. The project website is at (www.hwy1-17.caltrans.ca.gov/)
