Venus Fort (Tokyo)

Japan / Tokio / Tokyo
store / shop, restaurant, shopping mall

Every 30 minutes, an artificial sun sets over the faux-cobbled streets of the Venus Fort shopping mall. The designers of this spectacular cathedral of retail were charged with the unenviable task of capturing the ambience of old Venice in a new shopping centre on an artificial island, and the result is a surreal one. Tastefully lit, marble-painted concrete abounds, festooned with plastic ivy and slightly too much baroque sculpture. It's clear that a huge amount of effort and money has gone into this ham-fisted attempt at recreating 18th century Italy, but it feels so delightfully wrong that it could only possibly exist in Japan.
