The New Museum of Contemporary Art (New York City, New York)

8-story deconstructivist-style museum building completed in 2007. Designed by Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa of SANAA, Tokyo and partnered with Gensler. The building is expressed as a series of six asymetrically stacked aluminium-clad boxes which are shifted off center, the inspiration being the traditional set-backs exhibited by some of the city's earlier skyscrapers. The façade is shrouded in 3,270 square meters of expanded aluminium, and is the first time this medium has been employed in the United States.

The museum opened its new facilities at 235 Bowery thirty years after its founding. The new building provides an enhanced level of architectural space to facilitate the museum's mission of showcasing the art and ideas of contemporary artists. The adjoining 7-story turn-of-the-century building at 231 Bowery has been incorporated into the museum as Studio 231, a space focused on the creation of new works.
