Historically:
The Tränenpalast (palace of tears) is the local name for the former departure hall of the Checkpoint "Train station Friedrichstraße".
When Berlin was split in West and East Berlin, it was not allowed for most East Berliners to travel to the West. At this checkpoint they had to say goodbye to their West German visitors who where going home, that is why it is called palace of tears.
