Sewards End

United Kingdom / England / Saffron Walden /
 Upload a photo

Small village approximately 1 mile away from Saffron Walden.

Used to have a village shop called 'Lord's Stores'. This shop was run by an old lady called Miss Lord who never ordered new stock, and therefore had cans of baked beans from the 1940s on her shelves. I seem to remember a story about burglars trying to break in here, but Miss Lord fending them off by throwing baked bean tins at them.

Miss Lord also used to play the organ in the village church, which created some awkward moments because she was quite deaf.

Lord's Stores was torn down soon after Miss Lords died a few years ago, which was a sad day for the village.

Sewards End also used to feature several village pubs, the last of which was called the Green Dragon. However, this went out of business some time ago and was torn down to be replaced by a housing development called 'Dragon's Green'. See what they did there?

it's sad there's now practically nothing to do in the village other than walk down the hill to tesco... fun!

My father lived and worked at Lord's Stores in the 1920s or 30s, when it was run by Len Lord. Apparently it was a well run enterprise then. After Dad died in the late 1980's I visited the shop for the first time, to take photos for the family history. My first impression was that Miss Lord had not touched the shop at all - it was like a pre-war time capsule - preferring to await a good offer for the site. Apparently not, for although she took me for a property developer she was openly hostile and tried to throw me out. I'm much more surprised that the place remained open at all than that it wasn't developed until after she died.
