The Swan Centre

This 1960s shopping centre is set for demolition and redevelopment. The proposed development was approved in 2006 along with a Tesco store over the road on a plot of land which has been vacant for many years since the demolition of homes on the site. There were objections raised to the development including the loss of land to the park and also the decreased size of the market hall. However, lack of business in the market hall was damaging the sustainability of the building itself and therefore it was decided the size had to be reduced. Many small business are located further east in the concrete building as well as small branches of larger companies. Bakeman House, a tower block, is located on top of the building and is home to mainly elderly residents. Views from this highrise are good however views of the city centre are blocked on the whole by the Equipoint offices.
