One of the first hydroelectric plants built on the Niagara Gorge. The 25Hz facility was destroyed in a rock slide in 1956 after years of water getting in to the rock face behind the powerplant.
"A rock slide roared like a thousand lions followed by three earth shaking electrical explosions, buried two-thirds of the Schoellkopf Power Station in Niagara Falls, New York at the base of the Niagara Gorge shortly after 5 p.m. (Thursday June 7th 1956).
The site is now used as the dry dock winter storage location of the Maid of the Mist boats.
