This is the Carlsberg Group's brewery factory in Malaysia. The Carlsberg Group is a Danish brewing company founded in 1847 by J.C. Jacobsen after the name of his son Carl. The first Carlsberg beer was imported into Malaysia in 1903. Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia Berhad was incorporated in December 1969 and began brewing Carlsberg Green Label beer locally in 1972. Carlsberg Malaysia is 51% owned by the Carlsberg Group and is listed on the Main Board of Bursa Malaysia Securities Berhad (Malaysia Stock Exchange) under the consumer products sector.
Malaysia, though a Muslim country, is the tenth largest consumer of alcohol in the world (2001 ranking). Each year Malaysians spend over US$500 million on alcohol. Whilst the per capita consumption is 7 litres, those who do drink alcohol consume heavily. Among the drinking population, the Malaysian Indians are by far the heaviest drinkers with an annual consumption of absolute alcohol exceeding 14 litres. Beer consumption in Malaysia at 11 litres per capita is comparable to that of European countries known for their high consumption. Direct alcohol advertising is not allowed over the broadcast media and on billboards, except in the state of Sabah and Sarawak in East Malaysia.
