Opened in 1972, Ueno Royal Museum is partially supported by an endowment from the Japan Art Association, Japan’s oldest and most distinguished arts organisation. Primarily a rental gallery, the museum also contains a permanent collection of some 600 contemporary Japanese prints. It also sponsors a number of annual competitions that have become major events in the Japanese art world, including the Ueno Royal Museum Grand Prize Exhibition, the Japanese Nature in Art Exhibition and Vision of Contemporary Art (VOCA) and holds joint exhibitions with other museums, as well as being closely involved with other art-related organisations and groups.
