AssilahOne may state that graphical location and climate are among the most imporatant factors wich characterize the life of nations and cencentrations of population that belong to these regions. Indeed populations living on migratory routes and trading in areas with a mild climate experience important events and develop a history rich in culture and sivilisation. On the other hand, nations that belog to isolated areas with a severe climate only produce a barren history and a series of events without significance.
The mothern region of Morocco where the city of Asilah is located is among those regions blessed by nature. It benefits from geographical pôsition, being located at the entrance to the mediterranean sea, close to an international highway that links several continents. Although the city of Asilah is not on a direct route to the strait of Gibraltar, it is not far from Cap Spartel and the cities of Ceuta and tangiers. For this reason it has been influenced by events in these two cities. History says that Asilah- called “ZILIS”- rebelled against the authority of Carthage and distinguished itself by minting its own money. On the other hand it submitted to the autority of “BOUKOUD” which it paid for very dearly. As a matter of fact emperor Octavian gave the order to exile all the population to Spain. He nevethless granted them numerous rights and liberties in the legal and fiscal fields and their governor did not have to be appointed by Rome but was allowad to be elected by the population.
