This was very briefly a US Army airfield, intended for pilot training during World War I. However, the war ended before the airfield was completed, and the field turned out to be too rocky for the purpose. Many of the original buildings survive, and these are all clustered near Congress Avenue. This complex is still called Penn Field and includes upscale retail and office space. The polygon outline shows the approximate boundaries of the original airfield, now mostly filled in with apartment buildings.
