Flanagan Historic House/Rose Garden (Boys Town, Nebraska)

Constructed in 1927, the Father Flanagan House was the home of Father Edward Flanagan for over 12 years. The red brick house was designed in a puritanical Georgian Revival manner with five bedrooms and a formal living room, dining room, office and kitchen. After Father Flanagan moved into a new rectory attached to Dowd Chapel, his former home was used as a residence for various religious orders who worked at Boys Town. In 1974 renovation of the home began to restore and furnish it as it would have appeared in the late 1920s when Father was in residence. The house contains several of Father Flanagan's personal belongings including, his desk constructed out of thousands of pieces of inlaid wood made for him by Girls and Boys Town residents. The house is one of the oldest buildings left on the Girls and Boys Town campus. The Girls and Boys Town Rose Garden dates back to the 1930s. Father Flanagan encouraged the establishment of gardens on the campus as a way of having the Girls and Boys Town students engaged in a positive outdoor activity. The rose garden currently consists of twenty-two beds containing over 450 roses.
