One of the reasons Father Flanagan sought Girls and Boys Town’s present location was the ability for his boys to raise food and be self-sufficient. Today, the farm provides opportunities for after-school and summer employment as well as small animal and gardening projects. The fields still are planted and harvested, but with little involvement from the youth because of the mechanized operation. In its heyday, the farm produced meat, vegetables and milk to feed Father Flanagan’s boys. The main barns were built in the late 1930s. Lore has it that during filming of the 1938 movie, “Boys Town,” the movie crew sent messengers to silence the construction crews while they were shooting a scene. After the scene was complete, they would allow the workers to continue erecting the structure.
