Poughkeepsie Train Station (City of Poughkeepsie, New York)

End of the line for Metro North, transfer point for Amtrak service to Albany and NYC. The Poughkeepsie Railroad Station was designed c. 1918 by Warren & Wetmore. The design incorporated many of the then fashionable classical ornamental details popularized by Beaux-Arts trained architects. Much attention was given to decorative brickwork, especially in the interior and to complex, carved cornices. The ceiling, with its pattern of exposed wooden beams, was probably modeled after the widely published example of St. Miniato in Florence, built in the 11th century. The interior, a single large room, would have impressed travelers with its scale as well as decoration. As a grand gallery, with enormous arched windows permitting light to fill the room in the daytime or with large ornate chandeliers lighting it at night. The station is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
