The eastern part of Rice County is gently rolling land that was once covered by a large forest of hardwoods called the "Big Woods" by early explorers and settlers. These woods, some 45 miles wide and running from central Minnesota to the southeast, consisted mainly of maple, basswood, white and red elm and red oak. The early settlers wasted no time in clearing these woods for farming, leaving little to be remembered except for an occasional grove.

A remnant of these woods, standing east of Faribault, a thousand-acre memorial to the Big Woods.
