Actually, Ft Langley was discarded as the capital in favour of New Westminster. One ofthe main reasons was so that there would be an obstacle (river) between the Americans and the capital. Once established as the caplital of BC (mainland) Royal Engingeers from the British army laid out and planned the city. "Kingsway" was built by them as a route to the main port for shipping etc False Creek. Remember, Vancouver was a nothing village at the time. They aslo constructed "North" road as a straight, dirct route to where the trains stopped and unloaded - Port Moody (Moody was one of the engineers and eventually Governor of BC). |
