This is the first suspension bridge ever built in the USA and is the only functional suspension bridge in Massachusetts today!
The Old Chain Bridge, built in 1791 was rebuilt in 1810

The New Chain Bridge was built in 1909

It has been recently renovated (in 2003). It spans the Merrimack River in two steps with an island in the middle and is fun to drive over. There is also a nature trail and parking on the little island (for about 4 cars).
