Ophir was a gold rush town in the early 1900's. The site is currently abandoned, but serves as a checkpoint in the Iditarod Trail Dog Sled Race. An airstrip with single gravel runway exists at the village, but is currently in disuse and unmaintained. The airstrip was built prior to 1949.
Mining and placer panning in the area continued into the 1950's. The remains of the abandoned town burned in a brush fire in the 1970's. The area remains an attraction to occasional casual prospectors to this day.
