Lancaster house is used for government receptions. It is closed to the public except on rare open days.
Built between 1825 and 1840 by Benjamin Dean Wyatt (exterior/interior), Sir Robert Smirke & Sir Charles Barry (exterior). First full resident: George Leveson-Gower, Ist Duke of Sutherland. His many distinguished guests included Harriet Beecher-Stowe & Giuseppe Garibaldi. Chopin gave a recital here with Queen Victoria as guest.

  • Was originally built for the Duke of York but due to Financial Problems was acquired by the Duke of Sutherland and became Stafford House the name taken from the Marquess of Stafford title held by the family.The House remained in the family until the 1910s when it was sold by the 5th.Duke to Lord Leverhulme.It then became a Government Property and changed its name to Lancaster House
