Formally known as the Joseph Dupuy Residence, the South Seas House is a turn-of-the 20th-century house turned community center. Located in the historic West Adams District, the South Seas House was renovated to create a gathering place for the community. The house was saved from demolition by proactive and committed neighborhood residents, who convinced their local official to secure funding to restore it for use by the areas families. Nearly $1 million went into its extensive interior and exterior renovation. The 'South Seas House' got it more popular name because if the strong Polynesian architectural influence of the original structure.
The House is owned, managed and staffed by the Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks. The Department's programs include after-school homework help, winter and summer day camps, and special events at the adjacent park. Many neighborhood groups blocks and community organizations also use the facility for meetings and special events.
