Greenwich was reached by the first suburban railway in London: The London & Greenwich Railway which ran to Tooley Street (now London Bridge) in London. Later, other lines were built to London Bridge which left the Greenwich Line as a small dead-end, but in 1878 it was extended to Charlton. The DLR arrived in 1993 and saw several changes to the station.

The railway station is located on the line from London Bridge to Dartford via Greenwich and Woolwich, and is served by the DLR to Lewisham, Bank, Tower Gateway and Stratford
