river source, interesting place
The actual source of the Mississippi River is here at the southeast end of Little Elk Lake, a full 9 miles upstream from the traditional "source" at the outflow of Lake Itasca. Many of the surrounding lakes sit in depressions with no outflow, but Little Elk Lake's outflow at the northeast end of the lake drains northward into Elk Lake and then Lake Itasca. The Mississippi-Missouri River source is in Montana.
