A unique maldivian intiative for rubbish disposal. Previously, this area was only shallows. However, due to a increasing amount of waste generated by Male', Villingili and Hulhule', the Thilafushi project was started. Here, rubbish is buried in pits of reclaimed sand, thus increasing the land mass gradually. Water around the island is regularly tested for contaminents and pollution (according to WHO and other foreign parties, contamination is minimal and at safe levels) and no toxic rubbish is disposed of here. The land mass is now rented to several companies, and has provided an industrial island, with a cement company, several fibre glass boat manufacturing companies and a gas/oil company now established and running.
