Cape Flattery Silica Mines, a wholly owned subsidiary of Mitsubishi Corporation, is the leading producer of world class silica sand for the glass, foundry and chemical industries.
Founded in 1967, the mine was purchased by Mitsubishi in 1977 and in 1987 a deep water jetty was brought into operation. Cape Flattery Silica Mines employs over 100 people of which half are of Aboriginal descent.
The Cape Flattery Mine Site on Cape York covers a lease of around 6500 hectares and has an estimated resource of over 500 million tonnes of silica sand. Cape Flattery Silica Mines is the largest global exporter of silica sand and has the highest production of silica sand for any mine in the world.
