Denys Puech's Monument renfermant les cendres de Francis Garnier (Paris)

Denys Puech's Monument renfermant les cendres de Francis Garnier (Monument-enclosure for the ashes of Francis Garnier) was originally sculpted in 1898.

Marie Joseph François (Francis) Garnier (1835 - 1873) was a French naval officer, colonial administrator, and explorer known for his expediations along the Mekong River in Southeast Asia. He was slain in a fight with the Black Flags in Hanoi, causing the french to abandon the city after a treaty with the Vietnamese.

In 1983, Garnier's body was exhumed from its burial in Vietnam and incinerated. Along with the remains of Doudart de Lagrée, it was transported back to France and placed within the base of this monument in 1987.
