Ravenswood Generating Station (New York City, New York)

USA / New Jersey / West New York / New York City, New York / 37th Avenue, 37-20
 power station, 1963_construction

The Ravenswood Generating Station sits on the site of Blackwell Mansion. Built in 1744 by Jacob Blackwell, the Blackwell mansion was a private residence, boys' boarding school, and picnic park during its 157 year lifespan. Although demolished in 1901, one of its historic doors, installed in 1765, was saved and recently donated by the Brooklyn Museum to the Greater Astoria Historical Society. The door still bears the Arrow of Confiscation carved into it by British troops when they occupied Queens in 1776.

The Ravenswood Generating Station began operation in 1963 and was the home of Ravenswood Unit 3 -"Big Allis," a generator manufactured by Allis-Chalmers that could produce one million kilowatts of electric power. Big Allis was the world's largest electric generating unit when it was placed into service in 1965. The gas turbine site located adjacent to the plant is used for "quick start" power to meet peak electricity demand periods, especially during the summer.
