Gateway in the City Wall (London)

In this subway passage, well excavated and displayed, is the base of one of the smaller gates which gave access to the City from the East. The building and later extensions of the Tower of London disrupted the street pattern and it is thought that this gate was built following the diversion of a road which had been further south. The quality and preservation of the masonry is surprisingly good.
